We, the disturbing animal: effects of anthropogenic noise in a Brazilian zoo

The negative effects of loud anthropic sounds on non-human health and welfare urges attention. We report here the results a technical study we conducted attending Public Prosecutor’s request at Ribeirão Preto, SP, Brazil. A Civil Inquiry informed against nocive human concentration captive free-living animals around municipal zoo. zoo is part natural protected area that paradoxically was used as locale for public festivities. aimed to compare two weekends, one traditional Italian event (EV) another with no (NE), check sound level behavioral changes in sample soundscape. employed three procedures: (1) Sound Pressure (SPL) assessment different localities; (2) Comparative behavior analysis; (3) Soundscape description. Our provided cues how festivities may be affecting APA Morro do São Bento ones. Peak SPL exposure higher EV almost all localities zoo; six monitored individuals (two ocelots, crassow, European cervid maned-wolf) changed their activity resting patterns soundscape more diverse intense vocal than NE.
